Sylvester Williams was born in Dallas, Texas. He first gained attention as an artist at the age of 14, when the Grand Rapids Herald did a three-page spread on Sylvester and his art. He was featured twice more before graduating high school. He majored in Fine Arts at the University of Alaska and was an illustrator for the U.S. Army for four years. Sylvester arrived in Santa Monica, California in 1992 and became homeless shortly thereafter. Twelve years later, in 2004, Shelter Plus in Glendale, California provided him with a home and he has resided in Glendale ever since. During the time he was homeless, Sylvester continued to paint and sell his art; celebrities who own works by him include Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt and Denzel Washington.

Sylvester’s works reflect his life experiences and his desire to share the gift that he believes was given to him by God. He considers his art to be his dialogue with the observer and he strives to evoke the same emotions in others that he feels when creating each piece. A brush stroke, a pen line, a particular color, alone or together, can create a mood or feeling. As Sylvester explains it, his spirit dictates the medium and subject; and often, music dictates his spirit.
